Alcohol The Cause of Abuse of Medical Staff

Almost 90 per cent of emergency medical staff in Vitoria's hospitals have been physically assaulted or threatened by drunken patients in the past year, accoring to a new report.

The Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM) survey questioned more than 2000 emergency department doctors and nurses and revealed many suffer almost hourly incidents of abuse.

On the basis of its research, backed by the Federal Government, the ACEM has called for Governments to increase security in emergency departments and look at the availability of alcohol and proximity and number of outlets selling alochol close to hospitals.
