Assaults Are Main Concern of Striking Sunshine Mental Health Service Staff

Employees at the Sunshine Mental Health Service stopped work to protest about staff safety at the hospital.

Around 30 members of staff walked out on the afternoon of 8th June to demonstrate outside the hospital.

Joe Taylor from the Health and Community Services Union said that staff regularly face violence at work. Speaking to 'The Leader', which reported that 17 incidents of physical violence had taken place in the first two months of 2016, he commented that, “Sunshine Hospital mental health staff have often been working under extreme duress, with regular violent incidents due to overall rising demand and the impacts of drugs like ice.”

Staff work in a challenging environment, dealing with clients exiting prison, straight into the mental health unit.
