Behaviours that challenge continue to be controlled by prescription

Numerous campaigns and interventions to raise awareness and reduce or prevent the practice of over-prescribing have failed, according to an NHS England report.

The document published by the NHS earlier this year says that in England, between 30,000 and 35,000 adults with a learning disability are being prescribed behaviour-modifying medication without diagnosis of a behavioural disorder or mental health condition.

A significant proportion of these individuals are more than likely to have been prescribed this medication to modify behaviours that challenge.

Person centred positive approaches to behaviour reduce the need for over prescribing but can take time to implement.
