Bill to Protect Workers Selling Alcohol Blocked

An amendment to the Criminal Justice and Courts Bill, making it an offence to assault workers selling alcohol, was blocked in a Commons committee vote by 10 votes to 5 last Thursday (27th March).

Dan Jarvis MP called for the amendment, saying greater protection is needed to prevent people in the hospitality industry being exposed to violence at work.

According to USDAW their leader, John Hannett is disappointed that the progress of the amendment was stopped by this vote which they beleive would have made a significant contribution to reducing the levels of violence thousands of shopworkers face at work every year.
