East Midlands Ambulance Service Crackdown on Staff Assaults

The East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) has the highest percentage success rate of all ambulance trusts in England for taking offenders who have abused or assaulted staff to court.

In the past year 69 recorded incidents were not as a result of a patient's clinical condition such as mental ill health, a severe learning disability or medication and of these criminal sanctions were placed on 45 people and 15 received civil or administration punishments.

The Hinckley Times spoke to Nick Arnold, security management specialist at EMAS who investigates these incidents and works with the police and the Crown Prosecution Service to prosecute offenders. He said: “It’s unbelievable that some people think it's OK to physically assault ambulance professionals who are only there to help in medical emergencies.

“Well it isn’t OK – and it’s my team’s job to make sure we track them down and take legal action against them so they get that message loud and clear.”
