New 'Withdrawal Space' Guidelines for ACT Schools

Strict new guidelines on placing students in withdrawal spaces have been introduced for ACT schools as part of the government's response to the autism cage scandal.

The guidelines stipulate that withdrawal spaces should not be locked and students must not be prevented from leaving.

The guidelines emphasise that "restrictive practices" such as the physical restraint of a child could only be used as a "last resort".

Practices to restrict the "rights or freedom of movement" of students could only be used in a bid to protect them or others from harm in a "one-off" situation.
