Physical Abuse of NZ Hospital Staff on the Rise

Physical assaults on hospital staff in Auckland have increased from 817 in 2010 to 1,148 in 2013 accourding to latest figures.

Emergency departments and mental health units see the majority of attacks, and many incidents are as a result of patients being in an altered mental state, due to conditions like dementia or mental health issues, or because of drugs and alcohol.

The New Zealand Medical Association said doctors had received training in how to deal with agitated patients and hospitals took numerous measures to ensure staff safety, including posting security guards at high-risk units.
