Tougher Penalties for Bus Driver Assaults in SA?

The South Australia State Government is considering new laws to bring in tougher penalties for anyone assaulting a bus driver.

The move comes after transport Minister, Stephen Mullighan, who wants to see laws passed to make assaults on bus drivers become an aggravated offence, raised the issue within Government in response to concerns about the safety of drivers. The Transport Workers' Union said a survey of drivers showed that 30 per cent had been assaulted while at work.

The tougher penalties that would come with the law change are one of several measures that the bus drivers' union believes are needed to respond to what it says is a growing problem.
