Verbal Abuse - Campaign to Protect Referees

A Premier League-style 'respect' campaign has been launched in a bid to cut verbal abuse aimed at referees in Merseyside junior football.

Edge Hill Junior Football League has introduced the scheme to support referees after matches were suspended following foul language used towards a referee.

The campaign aims to protect officials from abuse from players, managers and supporters on the sidelines.

League secretary John Worthington said while incidents were comparatively rare, a "small minority" had been threatening towards referees.
