Video Cameras for Council Officers to Tackle Verbal and Physical Abuse

In a bid to stem the number of incidents of abuse against Hutt City Council officers, frontline staff are being provided with video cameras.

Accoring to the Council, parking wardens and animal control officers constantly receive verbal abuse and have also been pushed and shoved and exposed to physical violence.

This approach is not being adopted across the board and some Councils prefer to use training. Councils that have introduced camearas have reported a direct effect on negative behaviour and the Department of Corrections officers in high-risk prison units have been fitted with cameras worn on their bodies, after a successful trial in two of New Zealand's toughest prisons.
