Violence in School - Nursery and Primary Teachers Under Attack

Children as young as nursery age have been responsible for more than 3,000 attacks on staff in Wales' schools in less than three years according to figures obtained by WalesOnline.

A freedom of information request from 22 unitary authorities revealed that nursery-age children, as well as pupils in Reception and Year One classes, are among those responsible for physical attacks on teachers. Hundreds of adults working in Welsh schools have suffered violence, with figures from one council revealing staff reported being stabbed, punched, bitten, scratched and kicked.

NUT Wales policy officer Owen Hathway told WalesOnline,“These figures are both alarming and totally unacceptable. The level and nature of violence against teachers that these Freedom of Information requests have uncovered is of a huge concern. Physical or verbal attacks of this nature often lead to a loss of confidence in the classroom with some teachers considering their long-term futures in the profession."
