Will 5p Plastic Bag Charge be a Trigger for Conflict?

New retail laws, like carrier bag charging, can cause flashpoints, leading to verbal abuse, threats and violence against staff, says shopworker's Union USDAW.

The Union has called upon the public to respect retail staff as the new charging for carrier bag law comes into effect in England.

In a survey of 5,021 shopworkers, USDAW asked participants about their experiences in the past year. Over 55% reported being verbally abused, 33% said they had been threatened and just over 3% had experienced physical assault.

To highlight the risks to front facing retail staff USDAW organises a 'Respect for Shopworkers Week' as part of its Freedom From Fear campaign. 2015 week is 9-13 November.
