Government highlights need for de-escalation and personal safety training for COVID-19 marshals

    £30m funding announced for roles to support compliance

    The Prime Minister has announced that £30m is being allocated to all district and unitary authorities in England to spend on COVID-19 related compliance and enforcement activities, which includes the deployment of secure marshals.

    According to the government, the marshals will play an important role in engaging, explaining and encouraging best practice and national COVID-19 secure guidance, with roles that include:

    · Promoting social distancing and encouraging public compliance with COVID-19 public health measures

    · Educating and explaining COVID-19 Secure guidelines in the public realm and for business premises

    · Identifying and supporting businesses and premises not following guidelines, escalating as appropriate

    According to the government, to ensure COVID-19 secure marshals are able to carry out their roles and responsibilities safely and successfully, they should undergo training provided by the local authority, which should include de-escalation techniques, travelling safely and COVID-19 specific courses.
