As National Safeguarding Adults week comes to a close, we wanted to highlight the importance of ensuring staff are effectively trained and competent to recognise, respond and care for adults in a compassionate and supportive way.

Recent reports, such as Out of Sight, who cares? Have revealed the shocking use of restraint, seclusion and segregation in care services. Pressures resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic have also seen a rise in abuse and neglect to some of our nation’s most vulnerable people.

The demands the virus has put on health and care services has also meant that finding time for staff to undertake training has often been pushed down the priority list, particularly as we have found that safeguarding training is often perceived as dull, limited and a tick box exercise.

In response to these views, we created Understanding Human Rights and Reducing Restrictive Practices Programmes, which aim to upskill staff and improve the quality of life of service users in an informative and engaging way.

Many staff across health and social care settings often fail to recognise some of their practices as being restrictive and so our training aims to promote recognition and respect of the human rights, in order to ensure that duty of care and regulatory requirements are met in a way that promotes positive values and behaviours.

To minimise face-to-face contact for groups during the pandemic, we can provide our training online via virtual classrooms.

Our eLearning modules also enable staff to undertake training anytime, anywhere in order to learning around their extremely busy and high-pressure schedules.
