NHS workforce report highlights need for training relating to trauma, positive approaches to behaviour and de-escalation

    Managing uncertainty, resilience, cultural change and empowering staff highlighted as areas for learning and development

    Skills for Health have published a COVID-19 workforce report, which highlights that the pandemic has had wider than expected consequences on the healthcare sector, that will continue to significantly influence service delivery for some time to come.

    Of the 3000 respondents:

    • 72.2% said that their training needs have increased 
    • 22.7% say that skills will be lost due to the pandemic
    • 46.5% of respondents state that their respective organisations are planning to increase recruitment over the next 6 months (further increasing the need for training)

    Many of the training needs are a direct effect of working during the pandemic and relate to PPE usage, infection control, new ways of working (including clinical management of patients). 

    However, additional training needs related to soft skills such as: 

    • Dealing with out-of-the-ordinary situations (95%)
    • Awareness of changing clients/service users’ needs (96.7%)
    • Active listening (96.5%)
    • Awareness and understanding of others’ reactions (96.4%)
    • Leadership training and development (52.65%)
    • Organisational development (52%)

    • This is an interesting report which looks at the impacts of COVID-19 on the NHS workforce and there are a few key areas highlighted where Maybo can provide help and support.
    • Unsurprisingly, nearly 70% of respondents thought that the pandemic had had a negative impact on staff mental health. It has been an incredibly challenging time for frontline workers and early recognition and support can help to prevent stress and trauma manifesting.

    • Other key areas for learning and development include resilience and cultural change centred on awareness of changing clients/service users’ needs (96.7%), active listening (96.5%) and awareness and understanding of others’ reactions (96.4%) which fits with our positive approaches to behaviour & de-escalation offerings.
    • Respondents also said that they want less travel and less face-to-face meetings, but still need access to learning and development. Our training can be delivered via virtual classrooms and eLearning where face-to-face training is not able to be safely carried out or is not logistically convenient. therefore enabling learning to be undertaken in spite of the current pressures being faced by staff.
