Poll reveals extent of abuse faced by doctors on a daily basis
More than one in three doctors have suffered verbal or physical abuse from patients and their relatives during the COVID-19 pandemic, a Medical Protection Society (MPS) poll has revealed.
According to the survey of 1,250 UK doctors, 35% of respondents had faced verbal or physical abuse from patients and patient’s relatives during the pandemic, while a further 7% have experienced abuse from the public while outside a medical setting.
The level of abuse is causing some doctors to question whether to continue working in their profession, says the MPS.
An alarming number of healthcare professionals experience violent and aggressive behaviours on a daily basis. Often doctors miss out on training provided to nurses and colleagues in key support roles. Our training aims to provide doctors with practical skills and confidence to prevent and de-escalate difficult and potentially risky situations involving patients. By focusing on specific scenarios experienced in their particular roles and settings we help doctors and their teams feel more confident and better prepared to manage challenging situations.
We have the ability to provide this training online via eLearning and virtual classrooms to minimise face-to-face contact for groups such as GP practice teams.
